The Covenant ( 1 Samuel 18:1-3 )

Merriam-Webster defines covenant as "a word that refers to a formal, solemn, and binding
agreement or promise".
A Bible definition would be how it relates to God's relationship with humanity. 
On Aug.12,1961 I made a vow, to me it was a covenant between my bride and myself to stay married until death.

I. It is a covenant of Unity


II. It is a covenant of Love.

III. It is a covenant of Fellowship.

1 Samuel 18:1 And it came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.

1 Samuel 18:2    And Saul took him that day, and would let him go no more home to his father's house.

1 Samuel 18:3    Then Jonathan and David made a covenant, because he loved him as his own soul.

I. It is a covenant of Unity

     A-Notice the word knit in VI

        l)it indicates to' bind together -woven

       2)it means to make one out of many

     B-This covenant of unity can be found in the second paragraph of many Church covenants

II. It is a covenant of Love

     A-Notice the word love in VI

       l) it is a deep love

      2) it is a love like what Christians must have

               (if we say we love God but hate our

                brother the love of God is not in us)

     3) the covenant between David and Jonathan was formed out of love

        for each other and with God

   B-This covenant of love can be found in many Christian and Church  covenants

III. It is a covenant ©f fellowship

   A-Notice the word took in V2

      l) was token into the family

     2) if you have been saved you are in the family of God.

     3)if you are a member of a Church you are part of that Church family

     4)members of a family of love loves to fellowship and visit

Why should we have a covenant between us ?

John 17:21 Jesus praying in V20-21 that we may all be one,

John 15:12-15 He commands us to love one another

I John 1:5 fellowship with each other and with God
