Psalm 37:19

"They shall not be ashamed in the evil time,
And in the days of famine, they shall be satisfied."

Ashamed = bush = to pale, confounded, become dry
Evil = ra raah = bad, evil, distress, misery, wicked
Famine = r'abon = famine
Satisfied = saba = sate, fill, have plenty

The "they" in this verse refers to the upright in the previous verse.  The upright (those who stand right up for Jesus...hmm) shall not be ashamed.  Funny note, most people blush when they are ashamed, but the word literally means to pale.  Another meaning is to become dry.  Sometimes when embarrassed, a person's mouth is so dry they can hardly speak.  But my thought was, we won't become dehydrated even in the evil days.  We will not even be thirsty for we have rivers of Living Water available to us.

Evil times can mean the end times or just a time of personal distress.  The way the economy is right now a lot of people are going through hard times.  The children of God need to be sure that they are looking to God the Father as their source.  Employers, paychecks and government aid can stop or change any time.  God is the same always.  He never changes.

Interestingly the word 'famine' in the Strong's Dictionary has a one-word definition: famine.  This verse says, "and in the days of famine", suggesting to me that there will definitely be days of famine.  Not to worry though because the Word says we will have plenty.  Several families in our church have lost their jobs but not one family is going hungry.

I will close with the wording of this verse from the Message Bible.
"In hard times, they'll hold their heads high; when the shelves are bare, they'll be full."
