Psalm 37: 1-4
1.Do not fret because of evildoers, nor be envious of the workers of iniquity.
2.For they shall be cut down like the grass, and wither as the green herb.
3.Trust in the LORD, and do good, dwell in the land, and feed on His faithfulness.
4.Delight yourself also in the LORD, and He shall give you the desires of your heart.
I will try to recap the previous four verses. A couple of things jumped out at me as I was writing theses verses.)
In verse 1, I didn’t look up the meaning of the word iniquity because I thought it just meant sin. This week I heard these three definitions: sin is falling short, iniquity is twisted, perverse or deception, transgression is breaking the law.
The other thing was in verse 4, it says delight yourself also in the LORD. I didn’t mention the little word ‘also’. It implies that we are delighting ourselves in other things and that is okay. Just don’t forget to delight yourself in the LORD where the ultimate pleasure can be found.
Now here is the summary of verses 1 – 4.
There is a definite contrast between the first two verses and verses 3 & 4. The people who are not in a relationship with God are doing their own thing, looking out for themselves. Some are just trying to get ahead in this world with no evil intentions. They don’t see anything wrong with white lies or compromising. Then there are those who are definitely mean-spirited, using people, manipulating and scheming to make others look bad. They may get the promotions or be picked to be captain of the team. They might win first prize or be given the most recognition. But if they don’t turn to the LORD they will suffer for it eternally.
Contrast that with this: when we trust in the LORD and do His will, He promises to provide our needs. Doing the right thing blesses us in so many ways. We have the peace that comes with a clear conscience. We have the joy we receive when we see the response of someone that we have made happy. We have the friendship of God, who created us out of love. God is love and He created us in His image so that we could love Him and each other. This relationship with God is what it is all about. It is a never-ending circle, He loves us and so we love Him. He loves us no matter what. It doesn’t matter if we sin and act ugly. He loves us still. Do we love Him no matter what happens? What if things go wrong in my life? Do we blame God? NO, we trust Him, knowing that He loves us and will be with us no matter what. He has a plan for our lives and it is a perfect plan but since we have free will sometimes we make choices that go against His plan. Sometimes, someone else makes choices that can adversely effect us. In the end it will be all right. God loves you and looks forward to the day that we can spend eternity with Him.
